NANAIDA FOUNDATION

About us

Nanaida Foundation is a nonprofit, charitable organization focused on addressing the impacts of poverty on children’s education, community healthcare, and eldercare in rural communities in Ghana. We are a community-led organization dedicated to advancing the educational development of youth in rural communities of Ghana. We assist with raising the visibility of education as a fundamental element of sustainable development, which can break the cycle of poverty, and will benefit the rights, health, and well-being of students, individuals, communities and future generations to come.

Central to what we do is the provision of material and financial resources to promote opportunities for quality education and improving basic health needs in impoverished rural areas.

We do this by:

  1. Supporting educational endeavours and promoting learning opportunities for all by:
  2. Provide educational materials to learning institutions and orphanages.
  3. Provides scholarships to underserved college students and families.
  4. Coordinates services and accessible resources that improve the quality of life for youth and the elderly.
  5. Distributing personal hygiene products to schools and orphanages.
  6. Providing over-the-counter medicines, medical equipment and health/medical supplies to underfunded health centres in underprivileged communities.

Why Ghana?

Despite substantial efforts by national agencies to reduce poverty, most of the rural communities in Ghana remain impoverished. In a country where chronic poverty is the backdrop to society. There are critical shortcomings in Ghana’s developmental policies related to youth education, inadequate investments in food security, the healthcare system, and elder care. Consequently, programs such as the works of the Nanaida Foundation serve as a lifeline to providing life-changing health and educational opportunities to these communities.

What we believe

Education and development go hand in hand because it plays a huge role in poverty reduction. Lack of education leads to a lack of economic opportunities, and consequently, poverty entrapment. We believe that the journey towards sustainability is inherently a collaborative one and that we have far more impact by engaging with rural communities that are worth investing in. Nanaida Foundation, therefore, works to facilitate opportunities for children to access quality education so that they can have better chances to lift themselves out of the trap of poverty.

In addition, Nanaida Foundation believes that a healthy community is a happy community, which is why the Nanaida Foundation helps to improve health-deprived communities in Ghana by rescuing surplus medical supplies, over the counter medication and delivering them to underserved health systems in the villages of Ghana. We focus purely on the promotion and preservation of good health for the benefit of underprivileged individuals who live in rural areas of Ghana, by providing health centers with over-the-counter medicines, medical equipment and medical supplies.

Our History

Nanaida Foundation was established in 2007 by Irene Darko. Mrs. Darko had the opportunity to travel to some remote villages and townships in Ghana where she witnessed high rates of poverty. she learned about the many challenges that local rural schools and some clinics face every day.  Poverty was the main cause of these challenges, which included the lack of basic school supplies for students and teachers along with lack of personal hygiene products for students. She also learned most clinics in rural Ghana also experience multiple challenges such as the lack of medical equipment, medication, staff shortages, delivery rooms and admitting rooms, and transportation issues for patients to get to the clinic.  Listening to these stories inspired her to dedicate herself to efforts that would contribute significantly to alleviating these human conditions in rural communities.

Nanaida Foundation thrives on family members, friends, and teams of volunteers and contributors who, all together, share an abundance of passion and enthusiasm for making this life-changing dream a reality. To date, we have provided over 8,000 students with backpacks containing school supplies and personal hygiene products. We have donated medical supplies and non-prescriptive medication to 15 clinics in addition to supplying food baskets and groceries to senior citizens.  Nanaida Foundation plays a critical role by providing supplies that will enhance and empower the classroom learning environment and facilitate healthcare improvements that will contribute to ending the vicious cycle of poverty for economically disadvantaged individuals and families in Ghana.
